For most of my childhood, health and fitness weren’t exactly my top priorities. I was an overweight kid who dreaded the annual fitness tests in middle and high school. My diet was filled with Carl’s Jr. and Mexican food, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t touch a vegetable until I graduated high school. It wasn’t until a few friends convinced me to join the cross-country team in high school that I gave exercise a real shot. Despite never running before, I gave it my all. By the end of my high school career, I had numerous last-place finishes, but I absolutely loved the team and the sense of community it provided. When spring came around, I joined the golf team, where I did much better—probably because it didn’t demand much athleticism. After graduating in 2010, I tried out for a college golf team, but when I didn’t make the cut, I spiraled into depression and gained 40 pounds in my first semester. It wasn’t until after a breakup that I decided to take control of my life. I enrolled in a lifting class and spent countless nights on YouTube learning everything I could about health and fitness. Over the rest of my college years, I dabbled in powerlifting, Olympic lifting, bodybuilding, yoga, obstacle course racing, and even ran a marathon. In 2016, I discovered Stratum Fitness after moving from Iowa to San Diego to pursue a career in music therapy. The community was incredibly welcoming, and the workouts aligned perfectly with my evolving philosophy on health and fitness. I quickly became hooked, attending as many classes as I could and diving deep into functional fitness. By 2021, I became co-owner of Stratum and earned my Crossfit Level 1 and 2 coaching certifications. In 2023, I took over as full owner of the gym and added certifications in Pain-Free Performance, USA Weightlifting, and Barbell Rehab to my toolkit. Today, I coach group classes several times a week and work with both personal training clients in person and online. Coaching and being part of this incredible community brings me more joy than I ever thought possible. Watching our members and my online clients transform into the healthiest, fittest versions of themselves is and will always be the most rewarding experience of my life.
I love watching others succeed and improve their health and fitness. Nothing gets me more excited than giving a member a coaching cue that helps them hit a new personal record or when I hear news of a member losing weight or gaining muscle with some of the tips and lessons our coaches having given them.
