While many equate core training to the visible abdominal musculature on the front side of the body this term should really refer to all of the trunk musculature that supports the spine.

When you back up and take on this perspective it should then become clear that performing thousands of chicken-necking crunches and side-bends is at best a less productive way of training this complex system and at most can be potentially detrimental.
